How To Create Fake Blood For Halloween

If you don’t have enough time to set up an elaborate costume this year, or if your budget is a little tight, then some fake blood is the perfect way to turn an average or simple Halloween outfit into something a little gorier. Whilst you can just buy some tubs of it ready-made, this can often cause staining or irritation, which isn’t ideal if you want to put it on your skin.

It’s easy to create your own fake blood for Halloween and there are some recipes that will look far more realistic than the one you can get in tubes. You probably have all the ingredients at home already for you create it, so here are some quick and easy fake blood recipes.

Crimson Red

If you want clean and runny fake blood which is ideal for dripping and splattering across clothing, then this is one of the easiest recipes you can use. Simply mix together 3-4 tablespoons of cornflour or corn syrup with 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup. Once you have a smooth consistency, add in around 5 drops of red food colouring and mix until you have a deep red colour.

Psycho-Style

For a darker and more vicious looking fake blood mixture, then this recipe is ideal for those wanting to decorate more than just their costume. This mixture can look drippy and is perfect for smearing (think of the shower curtain in Psycho) but without the mess of traditional fake blood. This mixture contains laundry powder, so isn’t edible and shouldn’t be applied directly to your skin. It’s perfect for splattering onto a costume or in easy-to-clean places around your home.

To make, just mix 8 tablespoons of chocolate syrup with 4 tablespoons of laundry powder along with 4 tablespoons of red food colouring. This will create quite a goopy effect when mixed well and is now ready to add to your costume. If you want it to dry, simply use a hairdryer.

Blood and Cuts

If you want to create the texture and effect of cuts, burns and scabs, then there are plenty of kitchen-cupboard essentials you can use. From chunky peanut butter to toilet tissue, you’ll have no shortage of ingredients in your home.

To create realistic-looking cuts and burns, prepare one of the blood mixtures (depending on what you want to use the fake blood for) from above and tear thin strips of tissue and stir into the mixture. If you want to create a more bumpy effect, then onion granules or porridge oats will create the texture you are looking for. Once mixed together, apply to skin or clothing and let dry. The mixture will darken over time and is best applied an hour before needed.
